World Blood Donor Day, is the perfect time to raise awareness of safe blood donations and gives thanks to voluntary blood donors no matter where they are in the world.

To mark World Blood Donor Day this June, we are looking at how central lifestyle and nutrition is for maintaining healthy blood, and the nutrients that are vital to its production and function.

A balanced diet and staying hydrated are both crucial to optimising blood health, providing key nutrients and maintaining blood volume. Nutritional sources of iron, vitamin B12 and folate should be included in the diet, all of which are fundamental for overall blood health.

Iron is key for our overall health, and for our blood as it is required for red blood cell formation which supports oxygen transportation around the body via haemoglobin, without enough iron, both functions are impacted.

Whilst you can get a sufficient daily iron intake from a healthy and balanced diet with iron rich foods such as red meat, pork and poultry, seafood, beans, and dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, almost a quarter (23%) of the population take iron supplements*.

Women’s nutritional needs change throughout their life with different age and stages, as well as monthly cycles. Iron levels will be impacted during menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause, and supplements can be an effective way to maintain normal healthy iron levels. As a guide, menstruating women aged 19 to 50 require 14.8mg** daily intake of iron, with lower levels recommended for younger and post-menopausal women.
By using an iron supplement, such as BlueIron, along with maintaining a balanced diet, women can support their iron levels. Helping works toward a better general female health.

BlueIron also harnesses Nordic blueberries and employs micro-encapsulation to deliver highly bioavailable iron swiftly, while providing an improved taste and being gentler on the stomach. Providing recommended iron intake with just one dose, it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

By keeping our blood healthy, we have the opportunity to donate blood and support the lifesaving work celebrated this World Blood Donor Day.
